The Survival Flashover Training Facility, which exposes firefighters to real-life flashover situations, was built on the Starlight Mesa at a cost of $157,000. The facility was funded by a grant from DeWitt Stern Group and Fireman’s Fund Insurance Company. Nearly all firefighters involved in structural firefighting will experience a flashover during their career. Flashovers are sudden, dramatic changes in fires that can cause great damage and threaten firefighters’ lives. This facility enables firefighters to experience such a situation in a controlled environment and better prepare them for real-life scenarios.
Flashover fires are the second leading cause of death for firefighters. This high-tech facility is used by the Burbank Fire Department as well as many firefighters from the surrounding Area “C” cities.
